Omega-3 Fish Oil for Pets

We know you think of your pet as a family member, and want what is best for them. Animals need a balanced diet just as humans do. Omega-3 fatty acids are a tremendously important part of this diet. Omega-3's are considered to be "essential" meaning they are necessary to animal health, but which the animal cannot produce on their own. Research has shown benefits in a variety of areas including;

  • Immunity
  • Joint health and arthritis management
  • Skin and hair coat - reduction in shedding
  • Brain and eye development
  • Reproductive functions
  • Heart Rate during exercise
  • Overall heart health
  • Kidney and liver health

Menhaden oil is considered a perfect source of omega-3 because they are a clean fatty fish, rich in EPA and DHA long chain fatty acids. EPA and DHA are the basic components for the benefits mentioned above. Omega-3 fatty acids found in plant oils come primarily in the form of ALA, which then must be converted before any benefit is derived. This conversion rate is extremely low, making fish oil much more efficient.

How do we know you love your pets? Here are some fun facts taken in a recent poll:

  • When asked, “Who listens to you best?,” 45% chose their pet, while 30% chose their spouse or significant other.
  • If they were deserted on an island and could choose only one companion, 50% would pick a dog or cat rather than a human.
  • 93% are likely to risk their own life for their pet, while 64% of owners would expect their pet to come to their rescue if they were in distress.
  • 55% have an emergency preparedness plan that includes their pet in case of natural disasters such as fire, flood or earthquake.
  • 94% think their pet has human-like personality traits, such as being emotional, sensitive, outgoing, inquisitive or stubborn.
  • 94% take their pet for regular veterinary checkups to ensure their pet's quality of life.

Northern Michigan Veterinary Hospital believes all pets healthy or ill are good candidates for daily supplementation with Omega-3 oils.  Please feel free to discuss this with a member of our health care team.
